TEXT: Revelation 21:22-24
22 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.
In these verses, John begins to reveal to us a series of things that are not in the New Jerusalem. So far, we have talked about the fact that there is no Temple in the heavenly city because God the Father and the Lamb are the Temple of it. Now we see that “the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it.” When God created the world, He brought order and light out of darkness and chaos. On the fourth day of Creation, God made two lights, the sun to rule the day and the moon to “rule” the night.
Light, and the right amount of it, is very important to our world. This planet would not be habitable without light and heat from the sun. The source of light that God created is what makes life possible on Earth. Plants would not go through their process of creating oxygen without light from the sun. The water cycle would not work without heat from the sun. Without oxygen to breath and water to grow food, man could not survive. Several weeks ago, NASA announced the discovery of seven planets that might be able to support life. The key factor for each of these planets is that they are the right distance from a star to provide light and heat.
But not only in the physical realm is light very important, but in the spiritual realm, the concept of light has important undertones. The struggle between God and Satan, sin and righteousness has been characterized as a war between darkness and light. When God sent His Son Jesus Christ into the world, it was the D-Day of this war. John 1:5 says, “The light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” Of course, Jesus Christ is the “Light of the World.” Those who receive Jesus Christ as Saviour have His light imparted to them, and we are the “little lights” of the world.
For those who are not saved, the only light they will ever have is the light of the sun. But, for those who enter the New Jerusalem, they will benefit from forever being in the presence of the Light of the World. Just as the presence of God the Father and God the Son eliminates the need for a Temple building in the New Jerusalem, their presence also eliminates the need for a physical, created source of light. John says, “The glory of God did lighten [the city], and the Lamb is the light thereof.” This is one of the greatest rewards of the Christian — permanently escaping the darkness and dwelling forever in and with the Light of the World.
Aldine S. Kieffer wrote:
There’s a city of light amid the stars, we are told,
Where they know not a sorrow or care;
And the gates are of pearl, and the streets are of gold,
And the building exceedingly fair.
Let us walk in the light of the gospel divine;
Let us ever keep near to the cross;
Let us love, watch, and pray, in our pilgrimage here;
Let us count all things else but as loss.
Let us pray for each other, nor faint by the way,
In this sad world of sorrow and care,
For that home is so bright, and is almost in sight,
And I trust in my heart you’ll go there.
If you want to join Jesus Christ in the beautiful New Jerusalem, allow me to share with you how you can place your faith and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation from sin and the punishment of sin:
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
